This project was a idea of mine that I had been pondering for some time. As a consultant, on various occasions I have placed bids on several project-based job bidding websites such as "guru.com", "getafreelancer.com", etc., and gone through the process of finding supplemental work. I really felt like those websites (and others) lacked the aspect of highlighting the talented programmers and developers that were registered with them, and as as a developer, my opinion was that I had to go through too many steps to place a bid or make contact with a potential employer. I felt I could capitalize on their shortcomings and expand upon many of their ideas which hadn't been implemented.
I began development on CorporateRebel.com on April 1, 2004 and launched the first version of the website on May 5, 2004. The website engine consisted of 15 database tables, 105 stored procedures, a large data-class layer for interacting with the database, and several custom user controls which made up the project creation, management and also the bidding process on the website. I had to build a custom solution for interacting with our IPAY e-commerce payment gateway (who was launching a brand-new XML-based system at the time), overcome many design and interface hurdles, as well as create an actual company and go through all of "Marketing - 101". CorporateRebel.com was an unbelievably great learning experience, and really taught me how to approach a very large project with lots of unknowns, while still being able to make a reasonable deadline. I really nailed-down my project-management skills, object-oriented methodologies, and learned how to develop for re-use. |
